Sukma quartet powers Sibu into driver’s seat

KUCHING: Sibu Amateur Swimming Associatio­n ( Sasa) madeanearl­ychargefor­supremacy in the 43rd Sarawak Age Group Swimming Championsh­ips (SAG) at the Sarawak Aquatic Centre yesterday by capturing 22 gold, 14 silver and nine bronze medals.

They were powered by the Sukma quartet of Alex Tiong Sie Hung, Ngu Jiung Wei, Nita Wong and Cindy Sui who raked in 12 golds and four silvers.

Alex struck gold in all his five events – men’s open 100m freestyle, 200m IM, 200m breaststro­ke, 100m butterfly and 1,500m freestyle.

Jiung Wei bagged the gold medals in the Boys’ Group I 100m freestyle and 200m IM as well as a silver in the 1,500m.

Cindy’s golds came from Girls’ Group I 100m freestyle, 200m IM and 100m butterf ly and she also won two silver in the 200m breaststro­ke and 800m freestyle while Nita won gold in the women’s open 100m butterf ly and 800m freestyle as well as silver in the 100m freestyle.

Another major contributo­r to Sasa’s medal haul yesterday was Joey Wong with three gold and one silver.

Second in the medal standings are Kuching Amateur Swimming Associatio­n ( Kasa) 2010 with 12 gold, 12 silver and 19 bronze medals, followed by Kota Samarahan ASA ( Kotas) with 7-11- 5 tally. Miri Amateur SA ( Masa) are lying fourth with a 5- 6- 8 haul while Limbang ASA (Lasa) finished fifth with 4- 0-2 and Bintulu ASA (Basa) sixth with 1- 3-2 tally.

Fifty-two events were competed yesterday and 71 more events will be run today.

Eight finals were also held for the Sukma Time Trial later yesterday to select the swimmers for Sukma XVIII.
