KUCHING: A large crowd packed the civic centre here yesterday as they explored and experienced the ‘ hands- on’, ‘ minds- on’ and ‘ hearts- on’ activities at the ‘Creativity and Science4U 2016’ carnival.

It was an overwhelming start for the first day of the carnival, which attracted much interest among students and visitors alike.

The carnival, organised by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation from yesterday until March 6 is aimed at inculcating the virtue of innovation and creativity among students, and to introduce science in a fun and approachable manner to them.

Various interactive games, quizzes, hands- on, minds- on and hearts- on which are the ultimate teaching and learning activities were introduced at different exhibition booths to the visitors.

Hands- on enables visitors learn better when fully engaged, while minds- on tells that along with hands- on, visitors will need appropriate, meaningful activities and experiences to challenge the mind.

Hearts- on concludes that people learn the best when they are inspired and involved emotionally.

The space ball ( gyroscope) activity is one the exciting activities for those who want to have thrilling experience while they are strapped in their seats and spun in different directions at variable speeds.

“It simulates the training provided to astronauts to prepare them for zero gravity. It is an experience that visitors must try,” said Mohd Ridhuan Ismail who is a Science officer from the National Astronaut Agency under

At the Nanotechnology booth, young visitors especially students and pupils will understand more about technology. It is the branch of technology that deals with dimensions and tolerances of less than nanometers, especially the manipulation of individual atoms and molecules.

“I enjoy listening to the explanation and taking part in the activities here. I am glad to have a chance to come to this carnival…it really helps me to broaden my knowledge,” said 10year- old Darian Linggi from SK Garland.

He said he loved Science and it was one of his favourite subjects besides English.

His classmate, Luis Garcia, also expressed his passion in Science and English subjects, and that the carnival was a place where he could learn and explore more knowledge.

“I really enjoyed myself today ( yesterday). I was so excited when I first arrived here this morning. There are lots of fun filled activities here,” he said.

At the ‘Electronic Maze’ corner, visitors got to hold the handle and try moving the ring along the ‘zig zag’ path without touching the rod.

If the ring touches the rod a warning beep will activate.

“This is really challenging. It looks easy but it is hard to complete the challenge,” said 12year- old Joanna Voon from SJK Chung Hua Stampin.

She said she was excited that their school organized the educational trip to the carnival.

“I love to learn new things. This is my first time to this type of carnival,” she said, and hoped more of such carnivals would be held here in future.
