National Landscape Day to be held in S’wak for first time

KUCHING: Sarawak will be hosting 2016 National Landscape Day to be officiated by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem at 10am tomorrow.

Deputy director general (Policy) of the National Landscape Department, Meor Saadon Sofian Mior Razali said this was the fi rst time National Landscape Day was held in Sarawak with Kuching city as the venue.

“Our aim is to have the celebratio­n in every state in the future and this year here in Kuching the activities begin on Saturday (today).The highlight of the celebratio­n will be the opening by the chief minister this Sunday (tomorrow),”he said.

“The official date of The National Landscape Day should be March 3 every year but this time we have it over the weekend to bring in the crowd,” he added.

Meor spoke to The Borneo Post when met at the site of the celebratio­n at the Old State Legislativ­e Assembly ( DUN) building here yesterday.

The 2015 celebratio­n was held in the national capital Kuala Lumpur and it was held in Kota Kinabalu in 2014.

Meor disclosed that their department and four local councils in Sarawak namely MBKS, DBKU, Padawan Municipal Council and Sibu District Council together with National Landscape Institute ( Sarawak Chapter) and 20 other landscape companies will showcase landscapin­g exhibits

inside and outside the main entrance of the DUN building.

The programme for today will be a colouring contest, treasure hunt, mural painting and landscapin­g competitio­n among schools and bicycle ride to encourage healthy living.

Tomorrow, the programme will start with aerobic activities before the official opening at 10am. The highlight will be the planting of 333 saplings at the Botanical Garden in front of Wisma Bapa Malaysia Building

“To mark a healthy living lifestyle, there will be a 10,000 steps fitness gimmick by visitors at the Botanical Garden,” he added.

Tomorrow afternoon from 2pm, there will be a workshop on how to do tree maintenanc­e for the public.

He revealed 60 participan­ts mostly offering food and drinks in the flea market and a karaoke competitio­n at night.

Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government and 15 government agencies are involved in the event.

“Everybody is welcome to come and spent a great weekend at the celebratio­n,” said Meor.
