Discover prospects in Accounting at Kolej Sunway Kuching ‘Open Day’ this weekend
KUCHING: Kolej Sunway Kuching will run its ‘ Open Day’ today and tomorrow, and hold its registration day on March 12 for its upcoming April intake.
The series of programmes would give school- leavers — whether they hold Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia ( SPM), Sijil Tinggi Pengajian Malaysia ( STPM), or Unified Examination Certificate ( UEC) — the opportunity to meet college counsellors, lecturers and management and discuss their pathways and career opportunities.
Students and parents can learn more about the Certified Accounting Technician ( CAT), Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Diploma in Accounting ( DIA), Career Certificate in Bookkeeping and Career Certificate in Business Administration programmes on offer there.
A special feature during the open day is the waiver of CAT and DIA registration fees if students register on both days — provided they satisfy entry requirements for each course.
A special discount on tuition fees will be granted for DIA students who register on March 5, 6 or 12.
Kolej Sunway Kuching chief executive officer Joseph Lim hoped that the open day and registration day would encourage more school-leavers to take up Accountancy.
“We feel that it is our duty to better educate the public, especially the young people, about the accounting profession which has been regarded as a ‘ boring and difficult’ subject.
“The flexible and resilient nature of accounting continues to make it a rewarding career option for many. Every organisation — big or small businesses, an NGO ( nongovernmental organisations) or a charitable body — needs accountants.”
He said the upcoming April intake would be the college’s second this year.
“Our enrolment figures so far have been very encouraging, and we expect this trend to continue with the new intake.”
Kolej Sunway Kuching is the first and only tuition provider in Sarawak and Sabah, and one of nine tuition providers in the whole of Malaysia to have been awarded the ‘ Platinum Approved Learning Partner’ status by the ACCA — a feat it has consistently maintained since 2010.
The Career Certificate in Book- keeping is a threemonth technical qualification designed for candidates interested to work as accounts clerks or book- keepers in small and medium- sized firms. It is also suitable for self- employed entrepreneurs interested to learn how to read and prepare basic financial statements.
The Career Certificate in Business Administration, meanwhile, is intended for candidates preparing to work or working in business at a level that requires knowledge of basic routine administrative procedures. This technical qualification can be completed in three or six months.
The next intake for the Career Certificate in Bookkeeping and Career Certificate in Business Administration at Kolej Sunway Kuching will commence April 5.
Eligibility for both programmes is that candidates must at least have completed Form 3, with preference to those having completed their Form 5 education. In addition, they must be able to read and write in Bahasa Malaysia and English, and must have keen interest in the selected programme.
Those without formal or higher education will also be considered if they have significant and relevant working experience and can satisfy Open University Malaysia that they have the ability to cope with the programme.
CAT is a nine-paper technicianlevel qualification designed by ACCA UK, and can be completed within 12 to 18 months on full- time basis. It is recognised by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency ( MQA) as equivalent to a diploma and is generally regarded as a stepping stone to ACCA qualification.
Upon completing CAT, students receive exemption for three papers ( Knowledge Module) at the Fundamentals Level of ACCA.
The next CAT intake at Kolej Sunway Kuching will commence April 5 and to enrol, students must obtain a minimum of five credits in SPM, including English and Mathematics.
The DIA is a two- and- a- half year qualification accredited by the MQA, consisting of 30 subjects and is designed to provide an alternative pathway for accounting students who want to keep their options open.
In addition to pure accounting papers, DIA students will also study general business papers like marketing, management, economics, law, business mathematics and entrepreneurship.
Consequently, they would have the foundation to pursue non- accounting studies further upon graduation.
Sunway Kuching has established collaborative arrangements with 12 goodranking local and overseas universities that provide articulation pathways for DIA graduates to enter Year 2 of undergraduate programmes.
The said 12 are Nottingham University Malaysia Campus, University of Waikato, New Zealand, Birmingham City University, UK, University of Western Australia, Curtin University Sarawak and Australia, Swinburne University of Technology, Sarawak Campus, Victoria University, Melbourne, Cardiff University, Wales, Sunway University, KDU University, Shah Alam and Heriott Watt University ( pending collaboration agreement).
The next DIA intake will commence April 18. Eligibility comprises a pass in SPM/OLevel/ UEC with a minimum of three credits, and must pass Mathematics.
The next ACCA intake will commence July 11. Eligibility comprises one of these: STPM (two credits in STPM, plus five credits in SPM including in English and Mathematics); CAT qualification; or diploma/ degree from an MQA- accredited institution.
For the upcoming April intake, students pursuing these programmes at Kolej Sunway Kuching can apply for scholarships from Yayasan Sarawak/ Teraju ( for Bumiputera students); Yayasan Teras ( for Dayak students); Jeffrey Cheah Foundation ( for non-Bumiputera students); and Sarawak Energy Scholarship Programme (for top-performing graduates).
