UCSI students have fun time go-karting

-

KUCHING: Fourteen UCSI University’s ( UCSI) students from the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management ( FHTM) recently raced wheel-to-wheel in an intense, high-performance outdoor racing karts at Serapi Borneo Race Track.

Learning by experience, the adrenaline- fuelled event was put together by the students of Diploma in Leisure Management programme as part of their curriculum to expose and train them on event management.

Financed by the Serapi Borneo Race Track management, the event also served as a platform to build a strong belief in teamwork and promote the stimulating and exciting activity apart from improving other useful skills such as budgeting and communications. These skills will go a long way in giving the students the edge they need upon graduation.

Putting together an exhilarating event for the first time, the students were guided by Calvin Eng, the facility and event manager of Serapi Borneo Race Track.

Through their meetings and discussions with Eng, the students were exposed to new challenges, the nature of operational management as well as the future prospects of the said sport in Kuching.

“It was a really exciting experience for us. There is simply no other sporting event where novices and experienced alike get the chance to have fun competing against each other. It was a very educational experience as well. In a short span of time, we learned a lot from Calvin. Without his guidance and professionalism, this event would not have been a success,” said one of the participants, Sharon Lim.

The race was fantastic! I’m an adrenaline junkie and I really enjoyed the experience. The management team also made sure that the safety measure of this sport is well taken care of. The racetrack is also well maintained. I strongly recommend this sport to anyone as it suits all age groups.

Located at Matang area, Serapi Borneo Race Track is the first outdoor race track in Kuching that caters to go-kart and pocket bike racing. Kart racing or karting is a variant of open-wheel motorsport with small, open, four-wheeled vehicles called karts, go-karts, or gearbox/shifter karts depending on the design. They are usually raced on scaled- down circuits.
