Lee: Last of squatters to move to Tudan Desaras soon
MIRI: The perennial problem of squatters here is expected to be over soon, with their resettlement which is being carried out in stages.
According to Assistant Minister of Communications Datuk Lee Kim Shin, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem has approved the request of a group of 71 families from Kampung Merikan, to be resettled at Tudan Desaras.
“The group was left behind in a previous resettlement process and are still squatting at Kampung Merikan. Their applications had just been approved and we are in the midst of collaborating with the Land and Survey Department for the division of land lots.

“Apart from Kampung Merikan, at the moment we are also working on the process to resettle squatters from Kampung Api-Api and Kampung Pasir Lutong,”Lee told reporters here during a visit to Home for the Aged last Wednesday.
“We are very thankful to the chief minister because he has helped us a lot when it comes to issues of squatters, particularly in terms of giving approval for the resettlement of those who cannot afford and the less fortunate,”said Lee.
He added that until now, some 200 people have been approved for resettlement lots in Tudan Desaras, while the rest will be resettled once similar approval is received.
On the 200 squatters already settled in Tudan Desaras, Lee said he is working with related agencies to get connection of clean pipe water to their houses. He added that more than 100 houses have been built and are ready to have clean pipe water connected to the homes.
“All the 200 families have already applied for the clean pipe water and we give priority to houses that are already completed and occupied by the owners, as clean water is very important during this dry season,” he said.
Lee disclosed that the 200 families of squatters comprise those from Kampung Merikan, Kuala Baram former landfill area, as well as those from the surrounding area of Kem Sri Miri along Miri-Airport Road.
