Some 200 volunteers help clean up Kpg Tebakang
KUCHING: Some 200 volunteers from youth group, colleges, big bikers and village folks joined a relief effort organised by CATS FM.
The charity project was carried out at Kampung Tebakang, Serian yesterday which is a village hit twice by floods this year.
The volunteers who were assisted by the Fire and Rescue Department removed soil from a landslide, collected trash, cleared sand and debris from the village hall, futsal field, houses, and roads.
CATS FM general manager Mohd Iskandar Mohd Nawawi who led the project said: “This project is part of our relief mission under the # MisiBantuanBencanaCATSFM which renders aid to victims of natural disasters, catastrophes or tragedies with the help of volunteer friends.”
He said most of the volunteers who joined this mission were students and lecturers from Sidma College, TCS College, UiTM and Unimas.
The recent flood was the worst since 2003 which affected nearly everyone in the village including its mosque and church.
Nik Muhammad Afiq Nik Roslan from Zone 2 Fire and Rescue Department Sarawak said the water level during the recent flood was up to 8 feet deep.
“Our team managed to help clean up the mosque and church and today we will focus on clearing away the mud and sand along the village road which is one of the biggest problems faced by the people here,” he said.
Twelve officers from Siburan and Samarahan were also involved in the mission yesterday. # MisiBantuanBencanaCATSFM also handed over donations such as bags of rice, mineral water, detergents and foodstuff donated by corporate bodies like Water Genesis and colleges to the Village Development and Security Committee while Bus Asia supported the project by helping to transport the volunteers.
