KUCHING: The delineation of several state constituencies is to ensure better representation and to bring more development, especially to rural and suburban areas.

Housing Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state government realised this need so that more areas could be given closer attention.

The Satok assemblyman said this at the ‘Get To Know’ session with the Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) and people of Kampung Segedup and Kampung Sungai Maong yesterday.

Both areas are now under the Satok constituency following the redelineation of Batu Kawa constituency.

He described Segedup as a suburban area with most of its population from the Malay community, which he said would be represented under Satok.

“Segedup will be linked directly to Matang soon with the construction of a bridge from Emart Lee Ling, and we do hope that the bridge will further boost the economy and provide better link to people from both sides,” said the Satok assemblyman.

However, development, especially to Malay areas within the city and suburban areas, needed careful and proper planning, he pointed out.

“This is a sensitive matter and we do not want similar things happening to Kampung Dagang in Miri and Kampung Dagang in Bintulu to happen here. Both the villages are now nowhere to be seen as they are within the city centre,” he added.

Later, he revealed that a method to ensure the Malay community especially those living in the city would be protected and represented was still being considered.

“For example, Jalan Haji Taha is where you can find various thriving Malay-owned businesses and we will ensure that this will also be protected,” he said, adding what was important was for the government not to overlook and neglect their needs.

On another matter, Abang Johari said with Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem stressing on ‘Team Adenan’ for the coming state election, it is important that the people support the decision.

“I am confident that Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu ( PBB) will continue to be the backbone of state Barisan Nasional ( BN) and by having a stronger mandate, we will be able to administer the state better,” he said.

Adenan is state BN chairman and PBB president while Abang Johari is a PBB deputy president.
