YMCA Sibu president Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau said the camp will be identified as the Rave YMCA Camp Sibu, with the word ‘Rave’ as an acronym for rainforest and adventure, to make the great outdoors popular again for youngsters obsessed with egadgets.
“Since the beginning of this very special anniversary year, we have engaged a professional team to manage the camp site. This team has the experience of managing camps for over 10 years and we are pleased to work with them.
“They have been upgrading the facilities of the camp since January this year and we now have up to 10 new, exciting activities which includes the giant swing, flying fox, drift trike, slip and slide, stream rafting, blowpipe, darts, ping pong, badminton and frisbee,” he said in a press release yesterday.
He said they will be organising ‘ The 20th Anniversary Carnival’ themed ‘ Making Camp Great Again’ on March 13 to mark the anniversary celebration. He added they want young people to experience the excitement of camping and the great outdoors and not just engrossed to their phones and Internet.
“We hope the public members will come with their family and friends to join us in celebrating this auspicious occasion and experience the different kinds of extreme sports at the Rave YMCA Camp Sibu,” he said.
He said over the last 20 years, the YMCA Camp Sibu has served many campers ranging from school students, families to corporate adults.
The camp is well known as a recreational site for townfolk who want time away from the concrete jungle of Sibu, transported to a natural rainforest with the Pasai Siong ( River) stream flowing around the camp site.
Sited on 14 acres of land, the camp was built at a cost of RM3 million and opened on April 13, 1996 by current Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.
The camp has facilities to accommodate up to 350. The conference centre houses four meeting rooms, dormitories, dining area lounge and a large hall.
Campers can choose from two types of unique accommodation available at the camp which are dormitories and family rooms that suit their comfort and budget.
Meanwhile, a group of 40 students from SMK Luar Bandar No 1 Sibu were given the privilege to try out the new activities at the camp yesterday. They were accompanied by 12 teachers.
