MCA reiterates undivided support for Najib’s leadership

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai yesterday reiterated the party’s undivided support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to continue to lead the nation.

Liow, who is also Transport Minister, said any attempt to sabotage Najib’s leadership would be deemed inappropriate especially in the current challenging economic situation.

He said all parties should give their strong support to Najib’s efforts in leading the country to weather the economic challenges facing Malaysia.

“I strongly reiterate MCA’s stand namely to fully support the prime minister’s leadership.

“This year we have to face more challenges especially the global economic uncertainty and rising cost of living,” he told reporters after launching the new RM7million Kepong MCA building here yesterday.

Hence, he said any action to topple the prime minister would only disrupt the government’s efforts in addressing the economic challenges facing the country.

Commenting on the latest anti-Najib campaign by several veteran leaders, led by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who joined forces with the opposition in a move to urge Najib to step down, Liow described the cooperation as having no clear direction.

“We cannot agree with those who compromise their own political principles.

“People can see that all these are being done for their own political agenda and this is not good for the people,” he said.

He said as former leaders, they should have known about the democratic system being practised by Malaysia and any change in country’s leadership must be done through the existing electoral system.

“They should have used proper channels (through party and the general elections), not through an action that is based on rhetoric to topple any leader,” he said.

Earlier, in his speech, Liow suggested that the government formulate a national action plan to comprehensively address the problem of migration from rural to urban areas.

He said focus should be given on improving the welfare of urban society to help Barisan Nasional to regain the support of urban voters. — Bernama
