SIBU: A halal food centre has been proposed for Kampung Bandong here to transform the area into a major attraction for food lovers.

Nangka assemblyman Dr Annuar Rapaee said this project would comprise Bandong Walk, Bandong food court and eateries at the Malay Union Club ( MUC) area.

To spruce up the ambience, he planned to light up the whole area using LED ( light- emitting diode) lights.

He said Bandong area would create more opportunities for Bumiputeras in the food and beverages trade.

“Bandong food court will undergo a major facelift costing RM1.5 million. Allocation from the state government has been approved, and work is expected to start soon.

“With Bandong Walk, Bandong food court and MUC area coming together, food lovers will be spoilt for choice, and this will go a long way to promote food tourism,” Dr Annuar told The Borneo Post yesterday.

He also said it would be good to create a website or Facebook page to promote Bandong as the place to be, as the younger generation were more Internet-savvy.

On the installation of LED lighting, he expected this to be completed this year.

There are 23 stalls selling a wide variety of food and merchandise at Bandong Walk.

Meanwhile, he said another popular dining place — Taman Selera Harmoni — at Awang Ramli Amit Road here would be undergoing a RM2 million facelift.

With all these developments, there would be many opportunities for business in Sibu, said Dr Annuar.

Meanwhile, on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s visit to Bandong Walk and MUC area on Saturday night, he said this had given these places a big boost.

Najib toured Bandong Walk and later stopped at MUC hall to dine and mingle with the crowd.

Bandong food court will undergo a major facelift costing RM1.5 million. Allocation from the state government has been approved, and work is expected to start soon.
