KUCHING: The state has always been looking at various aspects to stimulate its oil and gas ( O& G) industry despite the uncertainty in global price of oil.

As such, the state welcomes the involvement of the private sector in finding ways and measures that will help the industry, said State Secretary Tan Sri Datuk Amar Muhammad Morshidi Abdul Ghani.

“Sarawak does not want to be just a bystander, we want to see participation and more growth in the sector,” he said.

He was speaking at the signing and exchange of memorandum of understanding ( MoU) between Shell Malaysia and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak ( Unimas) at Wisma Bapa Malaysia yesterday.

Morshidi elaborated that the industrialisation of the state was an ongoing process which must be assisted by industry players and others from the private sector in terms of expertise and technology

We have so much resources available here in the state and opportunity is there for those who are interested to be part of the industry. What is important is those involved are doing it right and adhere to procedures.

The MoU will see Unimas conduct product research on the use of Shell MDS Sdn Bhd (SMDS) Sarawax in 3D printing as well as lightweight concrete.

Sarawax is a specialty wax developed by SMDS in Bintulu and is sold both locally and internationally, and is widely used in industrial, commercial and consumer applications.

The MoU will also focus on up- skilling undergraduates through programmes such as internships and pre- employment preparations.

Unimas has collaborated with Shell since the 1990s, in which Sarawak Shell Berhad had contributed RM2 million for the Shell Research Chair, focusing on biodiversity and environmental conservation, dolphin research project and an ecological study for the establishment of the Piasau Nature Reserve in Miri.

Also present yesterday were Shell MDS board members Datu Jumastapha Lamat and Nicholas Sia and Professor Datuk Dr Mohamamd Kadim Suaidi.
