Sabans told to gel with other races to progress

-

MIRI: Since there are only about 2,000 Sabans – an Orang Ulu tribe – left in the world, they must cooperate with other races to progress.

In making the call, Persatuan Masyarakat Saban Miri’s newly elected chairman Usat Bilong said all Sabans must also be supportive of activities implemented by the association for it to stay relevant.

“We must move forward together with other Orang Ulu tribes. We must also have a big picture for where we want to go,” he said to The Borneo Post after the association’s annual general meeting (AGM) here on Sunday.

The Sabans are mostly living in Kampung Long Banga, Long Balong and Long Pullung in Baram. Some of them are staying in major towns in the state.

On the association’s programmes during his tenure, Usat said it would range from educational and sporting events to religious and cultural activities.

“My committee is a mixture of the young and old, so we will brainstorm ideas for the benefit of the Sabans.”

Usat added that his association would work closely with the government and community leaders.

“We do welcome suggestions and views, including those from Saban professionals, in order to progress.”

The line-up for the 2016-2019 term are as follows: Usat Bilong as chairman, Soliment Nyian (deputy chairman), Delina Liwan ( secretary), Paulus Balan (assistant secretary), Willie Tingal (treasurer), Bungan Bat (assistant treasurer).

The committee members are Supang Baya ( Welfare bureau), Paul Osat (Religious bureau), Renly Gau (Education bureau), Ricky Lai (Sports and Recreation bureau), Lazarus Apoi ( Development and Unity bureau) and Waty John ( Culture bureau).
