MNCF must sort out payment of allowance for riders — Khairy

-

KUALA LUMPUR: The Youth and Sports Ministry will not pay allowance to professional cyclists because the al lowance was promised by the MNCF and not the National Sports Council (NSC) or Ministry.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the RM1,500 allowance was promised by MNCF after the cycling squad won the gold medal at the 2015 SEA Games in Singapore and not NSC.

Khairy said the MNCF need to resolve the matter because the promise was made by the MNCF and not the NSC.

“It was the MNCF who promised not NSC or the ministry, therefore, the MNCF must resolve the matter but I will try to help resolve the matter,” he told reporters after announcing the Women’s Squash World Cup, here yesterday.

Media reports had claimed that the MNCF who met the NSC were informed that the monthly allowance for elite cyclists who had won gold medals in Singapore would not be paid.

The MNCF had said that the reason given by the NSC was that the cyclist were not involved in the full time training programme.

It was reported that Terengganu Professional Cycling (TSG) team rider Mohd Adiq Hussainie Othman claimed that the MNCF had not paid the monthly allowance as promised.

Meanwhile, speaking of cyclists who will see action in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in Brazil, Khairy said the process of selecting the riders was still in progress and that the door would remain open to identify the best riders,” he said. — Bernama
