MIRI: First time participants did their best to ensure the success of the ‘Community and Fire Safety Campaign’ held recently in Long Bedian, in the interior of Baram.

The two- day programme held last month was the result of a collaboration between Sabah Sarawak Gas Pipe ( SSGP) led by its operation support unit manager, Suffian Sabeli, and Fire and Rescue Department ( Bomba) Lopeng, Zone 6 led by its chief, Superintendent Law Poh Kiong.

Participants were taught fire fighting science, proper evacuation procedures from buildings, how to use fire extinguishers and a demonstration on how to douse fires.

Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau, who officiated at the opening ceremony, advised participants and villagers to preserve the knowledge and skills acquired during the campaign so that they would be able to use them when necessary.

“Take it seriously and value whatever you have learned today so that the time and effort spent to attend the programme would not be wasted.

“The techniques taught are very important because in the event of a fire, you would not panic as you now know what to do,” he said.

Apart from teaching fire fighting techniques, the event was a bridge for SSGP and Bomba personnel to reach out to rural villagers in the interior to build friendship and network for similar programmes in future.

Law, meanwhile, hoped Bomba could organise more such campaigns in the future for rural villagers.

He hoped the participants would share and impart whatever they had learned with their fellow villagers.
