Lakis: RM180,000 for 36 suraus, mosques in Sibu
SIBU: The Sibu Muslim Welfare Trust Board (Lakis) has distributed a sum of RM180,000 to 36 suraus and mosques here, for their activities during the fasting month.
Assistant Minister for Science Research and Biotechnology and Nangka assemblyman Dr Annuar Rapaee, who is also Lakis chairman, handed out the contribution to the 36 recipients, each receiving RM5,000.
“The contribution is for suraus and mosques in Sibu, not just for Nangka area. This is for them to carry out their activities during the month of Ramadan,” he told reporters after the handover at Lakis office yesterday.
He pointed out there was an increment in the distribution from the RM4,000 for each recipient last year.
On another matter, Dr Annuar said over the last two years, efforts had been made to improve suraus and mosques across this division.

ones, adding that the upgrading works would usually cost between RM50,000 and RM100,000, while each rebuilding could cost from RM500,000 to RM750,000.
Dr Annuar also highlighted the major facelift on Masjid An-Nur costing RM5 million, which was completed last year.
On the new Muslim cemetery in Kemuyang, he expected construction works to be completed in six months.
“We have got a big piece of land measuring about 33 acres in Kemuyang.”
On the capacity of the new cemetery, he said they were going by blocks, where each could accommodate 200 burial plots.
Touching on the ‘gotong-royong’ (work party) to clean the Muslim cemetery here yesterday morning, Dr Annuar noted the good turnout especially by those from government agencies such as Fire and Rescue Department, General Operations Force, Armed Forces and Sibu Prisons Department.
Lakis secretary Jamil Julaihi was also present at the event yesterday.
