Serene looking for that voice with ‘X Factor’
MIRI: Singing as a career may earn you fame and wealth but without the passion and right attitude, even a famous singer could fade away in music.
Founder and CEO of Serene Music Academy, Serene Cheam, agreed that Malaysia has many talents who have the vocal, the looks and can potentially turn their talent to a full career.
“However, many a time, these talents tend to lose their way. Many whom I have encountered lose interest and at times, they don’t even know why they sing in the first place,” said Serene who was here in Miri as a judge to Borneo Voice Star Singing Competition which was held yesterday evening and tonight’s grand finale (June 5) at the Grand Ballroom of Meritz Hotel.
Therefore, apart from imparting tips on singing, she will more importantly teach her students to become a better person, said the singer-producer-turned-vocal instructor.
“Honestly, with a gifted talent, it is easy to become a famous singer and entertainer. Being one with a good personality, positive attitude and dignity tends to be the real challenge.
“I could roughly describe Malaysians as ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’. I strongly believe that they will shine bright locally and internationally, if they are led in the right direction,” Serene told a press conference yesterday.

which is jointly organised by Bintang Megamall, Meritz Hotel and Serene Music Academy, is a search for local young talents in East Malaysia.
“I proposed this singing competition because I want to give more opportunity for the young to showcase their talent. Win or not is another story, but I am searching for that special voice which can stand out from others,” she said.
Serene, who was appointed as Malaysia’s talent scout by Voice of China, is keeping her fingers crossed and with eager ears, hoping for that special voice to be found in this competition.
“I’m not only looking for the voice that could be famous and make a lot of money, I hope to find a talent who can passionately bring out the best of each song he or she sings, and honestly, that is the tough challenge I’m giving myself.”
The singing competition, with the participation of 61 contestants from Sarawak, Sabah and Brunei, has on its panel of judges Alex Lau, local renowned vocalist from Sibu, professional singer Xiao Wei Wei, and Penguin Chan who is also a vocal instructor at Serene Music Academy.
