BINTANGOR: A social activist here has assured the Mer a dong folk that the great rural development and transformation would come their way, as promised by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem in his campaign during the state election last month.

Local- born Andy Kiing Sie Ying, in speaking to the crowd attending a Gawai Dayak gathering at Rumah Lium near here on Saturday, said the ‘Adenan Factor’ had prevailed, showing that the constituents here had faith in the state Barisan Nasional ( BN) and its leadership to bring progress to the rural areas.

“Let us see rural development in Meradong. We should work together with the government to turn this faith and hope into reality.”

Kiing also touched on the unique Gawai Dayak celebration in Sarawak, saying that it was a manifestation of unity and harmony among the people of this land.

Meanwhile, longhouse chieftain Lium took the opportunity to thank Kiing for bridging the gap of understanding between the rural folk of Meradong and the state government.

“Because of this understanding, the government has installed electricity supply for the villagers. This is the biggest joy that we ever had for Gawai.”

Popular homeboy Kiing grew up in the riverine district of Meradong and as such, he has seen the glory days of Bintangor over the years. He is now a civil engineer based in Kuching, but frequently returns to his hometown to visit the folk there, particularly the rural residents.

“I feel that they should receive greater help from the government, after Meradong fell into the control of the opposition – a time when rural development had slowed down.

“I have been coming down to Bintangor since 2008. It is indeed an agricultural town – the local folk plant pepper and greenskin oranges because of the fertile soil as well as the favourable climate and environment. It is for this reason that Bintangor is now famous for its ‘ limau’ (oranges),” Kiing said.
