I will continue with struggles of my husband — Mastura

KUALA KANGSAR: Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Datin Mastura Mohd Yazid said she will continue the struggles of her late husband in championing the cause of the electorate in Kuala Kangsar, besides continuing with the development agenda planned earlier.

Despite being accused of various slanders in the social website for being the BN candidate, while still observing the ‘iddah’ or in morning following the death of her husband, Datuk Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad, Mastura was confident that the voters in the area had the wisdom to evaluate her.

“I am a resident of Kuala Kangsar, I have been here for the past 27 years,” she said in her first press conference after being announced as the BN candidate in the Kuala Kangsar Parliamentary by-election by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on May 28.

The press conference held at Mastura’s residence in Bukit Chandan, Kuala Kangsar, was also attended by Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, the assemblyman for Manong, Mohd Kamil Shafie and Bukit Chandan assemblyman Maslin Sham Razman.

During the nomination process yesterday, Mastura was also absent at the nomination centre, although she was represented by the deputy president of the Perak branch of the Malaysian Malay Contractors Association, Datuk Megat Ahmad Shahrani Megat Sharuddin who submitted her nomination papers at 9.01 am yesterday.

Mastura, 55, also emphasised that she was not forced by anyone to become the BN candidate in the by-election. She said her selection as the BN candidate was an honour for her and promised to continue the struggles of her late husband.

“I have faith in the leadership that is why they chose me because they feel the good work of my late husband has to be followed through by a person who understands his needs that it will be done properly. I think the leadership understands and is sensitive to the feelings of the people of Kuala Kangsar,” she said.

She was also confident that all the BN machinery would assist her to defend the seat.

Mastura said if she was elected as the member of parliament, she would place more focus on local issues and continue with the development agenda planned by her husband.

“He loved rivers and the water, discussions with the Kuala Kangsar Municipal Council ( MPKK) to develop the banks of the Perak River were being held,” she said. — Bernama
