Cops to launch facility for citizens to alert police of crimes witnessed using handphones
KUCHING: Malaysians will soon be able to report in realtime any criminal incidents that occur in their presence via their smartphones to the Royal Malaysia Police ( PDRM) Command Centre.
This was disclosed by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi who revealed that the government will hold a ceremony on Aug 16 to launch this scheme with PDRM.
“There will be around five million Malaysians registered in this scheme with the police under the Blue Ocean Strategy.
“This will enable them to report in real-time any incidents that occur right before their eyes through their smartphone and report straight to the PDRM Command Centre so that the information is immediately received by the police and they can take swift action,” he told reporters at a press conference after officiating the Home Ministry’s ‘ RamahTamah Aidilfitri’ celebration held at Dewan Majma here yesterday.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also Home Minister, was asked to comment on what steps the government had taken in view of the increasing number of shooting cases in the country with the latest being the Setapak shooting on Wednesday where two gunmen opened fire at a car at a traffic light along Jalan Genting Klang near Stapak Central in Kuala Lumpur.

safety.
“We don’t want the people to take it lightly or easily any criminal incidents such as the ( Setapak) shooting case or bombing case (in Puchong) even though it is on a small scale.
“Therefore, the police are calling on the public to immediately report if they come across anything suspicious at their location,” he said.
He said that the police always stationed their personnel at crimeprone locations but they cannot only be on the lookout in these areas.
“This is because today’s focus areas are different compared to before as it involved public areas such as shopping malls.”

Ahmad Zahid also pointed out that in order to fight crime especially if it concerned weapons, the government will continue to implement the anti- crime Ops Cantas 2.0.
“Though the overall crime fell more than 30 per cent last year, the perception of the people on the credibility and capability of the police did not increase.”
“My ministry has also proposed to the government to improve the quality of border fencing especially in the north of Peninsular Malaysia which involves around 700km,” he stressed, adding that the border fencing was erected during the sixties.
He stressed that a holistic approach must be implemented and that the Home Ministry always prioritised the safety of the people and the country despite being financially constrained in improving the border fencing.
“Security must not be compromised and we are always ready in the forefront to defend the safety of the people and the country.”
Earlier during the ceremony, Ahmad Zahid and his wife Datin Seri Hamidah Khamis also took the opportunity to present ‘duit raya’ to 73 orphans from Pertubuhan Kebajikan dan Pendidikan Nur Murni Sarawak.
