Coolbeans Charity Concert to benefit National Kidney Foundation

-

KUCHING: SM Lodge is organising ‘Coolbeans Charity Concert’ with National Kidney Foundation ( NKF) youth ambassador Shawn Lee, Rejuvenate Dance Crew from 8TV Showdown and Astro Battleground.

It will be held at 7pm on Aug 6 at SM Lodge (Lodge National School) with all proceeds going to NKF.

There will be performances by Shawn Lee, Baki Zainal from 8TV, Dina Nadzir (recording artiste and ERA FM announcer), Lodge alumni and Hitz FM radio announcer Ryan Matjeraie, and other local acts from Kuching including the school’s teachers and students.

Organising chairman, Jonathan Chiam, shared that the concert is close to his heart as his father suffered from kidney failure, and he saw firsthand what it does to a person’s lifestyle and how it can crush a person’s life.

“My father had kidney failure when I was born. It gets worse as time goes on,” he said during a press conference yesterday.

He added that the patient cannot do many common activities such as running, in addition to requiring dialysis three times a week.

Thus, he encouraged people to

give back to those in need and to help those who cannot help themselves.

Meanwhile, Lee said he will be selling his new single ‘Fav Sub’ at the concert with all profits going to NKF.

“Malaysians have a very unhealthy lifestyle with their food intake and lack of exercise which leads to higher and higher number of people with end- stage kidney disease.

“It worries me when I visit NKF dialysis centres because I see younger and younger patients. Thus, I have been visiting schools to create awareness,” he said.

Malaysia has a significant number of kidney disease cases caused by diabetes and 5,000 people are diagnosed with kidney failure each year in the country, he added.

“The concert is initiated by SM Lodge students to promote awareness on kidney health. I hope the people who attend will get to know the proper lifestyle to prevent kidney disease,” said SM Lodge principal Dr Chen Siaw Wee.

She added the event was an opportunity for the students involved to develop problemsolving skills using critical thinking, which is what the school wants to inculcate apart from leadership skills.

Lodge Group of Schools director Thomas Huo was also present at the press conference.

The school targets ticket sales of 500- 600 and so far, 250 tickets have already been sold. The tickets are priced at RM30, RM50 for VIP and RM120 for VVIP (includes a backstage pass).
