Boy found with old and new wounds, mother arrested
SIBU: A single mother in her 30s was arrested yesterday morning on suspicion of physically abusing her son.
The badly bruised nine-yearold boy was taken to Sibu Hospital by his grandfather on Saturday where a doctor found the boy to be sustaining both old and new wounds.
The doctor, who reported the matter to the police on the same day, believed the boy had been pinched and beaten with belts, sustaining injuries on his stomach, neck, arms and legs.
The boy and his elder sister aged 15 were both taken care of by their mother after their father passed away earlier this year.
Police arrested the boy’s mother yesterday in their home at Oya Road.
Sibu deputy police chief Supt Martin Koo confirmed the arrest, saying he had ordered the woman to be sent for psychiatric observation before deciding their next course of action.
Meanwhile, a man from Song who came to Sibu seeking greener pastures was made poorer when he fell victim to snatch thieves.
The incident occurred on Sunday night when the man was walking to a supermarket near where he stayed around 8pm.
The man who works at a construction site at Nang Kiew Road in Salim had borrowed RM100 from his boss to buy food provisions and kept the money in his bag.
Two men on a motorcycle passed by him at Salim Road as he was near the supermarket.
The pillion rider managed to snatch his bag before speeding off with his accomplice.
The construction worker said it was dark and he could not see the two clearly.
He lodged a police report yesterday at 9.30am.
