Take The Chief Minister’s Cup debate seriously, schools told

MIRI: Assistant Minister of Solidarity Rosey Yunus is concerned that The Chief Minister’s Cup debate has been receiving lukewarm response from secondary schools in recent years.

This has prompted her to appeal to all secondary schools in the state to take an active part in it for the good of their students.

Speaking at the final of Zone H ( Bintulu) and Zone I ( Miri) of the competition here recently, Rosey said in the early years, almost all schools sent a team each to compete. But interest had dwindled since then.

Citing Miri as an example, she said it had 26 secondary but only eight registered for the debate this year. Rosey said school heads must realise that the debate represented an opportunity for their students to showcase their talents and to boost their self- confidence and public speaking skills.

“It is neither for the principals nor the teachers. It is about giving opportunities to the students, and that is what matters,” she said at the event at RTM Miri.

“Their ( students) fluency and confidence in the debate comes with enough preparations and research. They find their own materials and not spoon-feeding by their teachers, which is why this debate is good for the students.”
