‘Strive to make a difference’
MIRI: Councillors of Lawas and Limbang District Councils must strive to make a difference by serving the people using creative, innovative and far- sighted approaches.
Second Minister of Resource Planning and Environment Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan told them that the power was in their hands, and they should use it for the good of the people.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of councillors of Lawas District Council and Limbang District Council yesterday, Awang Tengah said Lawas and Limbang must grow as they would be transit towns once the proposed Pan Borneo Highway project was completed.
“Villages and towns must be kept clean, hygienic and beautiful while tapping border trade.”
He wanted the councillors to be firm in their actions, such as against unhygienic and unsafe practices.
“Sometimes, you have to be cruel to be kind. For instance, the mushrooming of stalls during festivals is good, but poor hygiene will turn customers away.”
He reiterated that the councils should also seek new approaches to create more revenue streams.
The government was aware of the financial constraints faced by local councils, he said, and would ensure that sufficient funds be allocated to them to ensure smooth implementation of development projects.
Awang Tengah also touched on the importance of promoting racial harmony, solidarity and mutual respect among the people.
“When talking about development, it is not just physical or economic, but social development in your community, too.”
Also present were Ministry of Local Government permanent secretary Bakri Zaini, Limbang Deputy Resident Selamat Jati, Limbang MP Hasbi Habibollah and Batu Danau assemblyman Paulus Palu Gumbang.
