Send Kapit’s silat gold medallists to SEA Games, govt urged

KAPIT: The government has been urged to consider including Pencak Silat exponents from Kapit who won gold medals at the recent Sukma in Kuching to be among the contingent for the coming SEA Games.

Bukit Goram assemblyma­n Jefferson Jamit Unyat said it is his hope that these outstandin­g athletes could be selected to represent Malaysia in the SEA Games because they had shown and proven their capability in their sport.

Speaking at the thanksgivi­ng gathering for Pencak Silat Helang Putih Perkasa Kapit at Dewan Melayu, Kampung Muhibbah here over the weekend, he said their participat­ion in the SEA Games would also boost their morale and give them the opportunit­y to explore their skills.

“We are proud that Kapit has helped to add colour to the state’s Silat team with its multi racial representa­tion who managed to grab two gold medals, one silver and one bronze medal which is an exemplary contributi­on to the state. This is our pride,” he said.

“I am happy that your efforts have paid off as you have done Kapit proud through your achievemen­ts. Though Kapit is a rural town we are capable of producing quality and potential athletes in the spirit of ‘Kapit Boleh’,” he added, while also thanking parents for their support towards the silat team.

He welcomed the government’s move to give due recognitio­n to the outstandin­g silat team and congratula­ted the exponents for their success.

They were gold medal l ist Olivia Chong ( Kelas F Puteri) who received RM3,000, gold medallist team of Rita Langat, Farrah Hannim Ismai l and Christy Sherry Anthony Paing ( Jurus Wajib Puteri category) with each receiving RM1,000, silver medallist Vanessa Sylvia Kenawang ( Solo Baku Puteri category) who received RM500 and bronze medal list Mohd Nazri Saiful (Jurus Wajib Putera) who received RM300. Two other exponents who failed to grab any medal received RM100 each.

Jamit also announced a grant of RM5,000 to Seni Silat Helang Putih Perkasa Kapit and RM3,000 each to its branch in Song and Belaga.

Meanwhile, Seni Silat Helang Putih Perkasa Kapit chairman Abdul Aziz Zainal Abidin thanked Jamit and other political leaders from Kapit especially Deputy Minister for Rural and Regional Developmen­t Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi for their full support to the club.

He also thanked the parents for their support and allowing their children to take part in the silat competitio­n.

“Your support has not gone to waste as your children have done us proud and helped to uplift the image of Kapit and Seni Silat Helang Putih Perkasa Kapit.”
