Less than one pct recidivism under CRP – Director
PUTRAJAYA: Less than one per cent of released inmates returned to criminal activities after the implementation of the Community Rehabilitation Programme (CRP), an initiative to reduce the number of recidivists (repeat offenders).
Malaysian Prisons Department Parole and Community Division director Datuk Abdul Aziz Abdul Razak said about 0.4 percent inmates who had undergone the programme at six CRP centres were recidivists.
He said the initiative was introduced by adopting the National Blue Ocean Strategy ( NBOS) involving collaboration between the Prisons Department and the armed forces.
Under the programme, the inmates would be selected based on their criminal background as well as the number of crime they had committed, he said.
“The minimum period they will undergo under this programme is six months and the maximum is 36 months and after that, they will be released,” he told Bernama.
Abdul Razak said this Tuesday after presenting the CRP project, which has been listed as a finalist for the 2016 Commonwealth Association for Public Administration and Management (CAPAM) Innovation Awards in the Innovation Incubation category, at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) here.
