M’sia CDM says Rio KPI achieved

-

TAN Sri Mohamed Al Amin Abdul Majid has declared that he has achieved his key performance indicators ( KPI) as the Malaysian chef- de-mission (CDM) at the Rio Olympic Games here.

He said the at least silver medal in waiting from mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying who made it to the badminton final today had improved on Malaysia’s two medal haul at the 2012 London Olympics.

In London, Malaysia brought home a silver through badminton star Datuk Lee Chong Wei and a bronze from diving queen Pandelela Rinong. At Rio, Pandelela and Cheong Jun Hoong last week clinched a silver medal, the first medal for Malaysia here, in the synchronised 10m platform.

“We have improved on the medal colours and more than that would be a bonus,” said Al Amin, who is also the acting president of the Badminton Association of Malaysia.

He was in a joyous mood at Pavilion 4, Riocentro here Monday after witnessing the mixed doubles pair make a giant leap into the final by disposing off Xu Chen-Ma Jin of China, the silver medallists in London, in 21-12, 21-19.

“Our pair were composed, cool and kept to their game plan. Indeed a final berth was a surprise but they were in fact earmarked to bring in a medal,” he said.

He said Datuk Lee Chong Wei was another medal hopeful, a gold medal, while the men’s doubles pair of Goh V. Shem-Tan Wee Kiong, who are in the semis, were also medal prospects.

“As I said before, there will be suprises and it’s unfolding now,” he said, adding that cyclist Azizulhasni Awang and Pandelela in the individual 10m platform were the Games’ tail end hopefuls.
