Speak-Up Camp encourages students to converse in English
SIBU: Some 200 students and teachers from 20 secondary schools from 10 divisions will converge on the University College of Technology Sarawak ( UCTS) for ‘Speak-Up Camp 2016’ this weekend.
UCTS vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Abdul Hakim Juri said the programme from Aug 19 to 21 was jointly organised by the university and Sarawak Education Department.
“This programme is part of UCTS’ efforts to promote and create awareness on the importance of English among students.
“It is also to provide opportunities for students to compete with public speakers as well as develop teamwork, confidence, leadership and communication skills,” he told a press conference at UCTS campus here yesterday.
Abdul Hakim said UCTS had been organising the programme previously known as ‘ Speak- Up Contest’ since 2013.
He said UCTS was motivated to organise it on a larger scale this time following encouraging response from students, teachers and parents.
This year participants were required to converse in English throughout programme.
Some of the activities planned for the programme are treasure hunt, brain teaser games, public speaking tips and speech contests.
The speech contest is divided into two categories: impromptu speech and prepared speech.
The top three winners will each receive RM1,200, RM900 and RM600 plus a trophy and hamper.
