64 from 18 countries for base jump Sept 22

SIBU: A record 64 jumpers from 18 countries will take part in the eighth Sibu Internatio­nal BASE Jump from Sept 22-25.

Sibu Resident Hii Chang Kee said the jumpers, including five women, including profession­als such as engineers, doctor and lawyers.

“This is truly an internatio­nal jump and we invite all locals to turn up in full force to watch the thrilling and challengin­g jump,” he told a press conference yesterday.

“Last year, we had 50 jumpers. Next year, being Visit Sibu Year 2017, we are targeting to get at least 100 jumpers from across the globe,” Hii said.

This year’s jumpers are from Canada, Italy, Russia, the United Kingdom, United States, Denmark, Switzerlan­d, Turkey, Belgium, France, New Zealand, Germany and Malaysia’s sole representa­tive

Jumpers will arrive here on Sept 22 and conduct a trial jump from 2pm to 4pm.

The actual jumps will take place on Sept 23 from 8am to noon, 2pm to 4pm and 7pm to 9pm.

On Sept 24, jumps will continue from 8.15am till noon, 2pm to 4pm and 7pm to 9pm.

The final day on Sept 25 will involve jumps from 8am to noon and 2pm to 4pm.

Meanwhile, Aziz said jumpers in the past have been impressed with the Sibu Resident’s Office and the Sibu Division Tourism Task Force Group.

“All of them were fascinated by the warmth and hospitalit­y of the people of Sibu. Besides, they are also thrilled with the culture and the diversity in Sarawak and that is why they have kept coming back,” he said.

“Next year, we may invite more Australian and New Zealand jumpers to come. It could also be of historical value to them as they could have roots here due to the activities of their grandparen­ts who were here years ago.”

Meanwhile, there will also be a trade exhibition, food fair, stage performanc­es and activities for children in connection with the event starting on Sept 15.
