KAPIT: The tender for the proposed concrete bridge project near here is likely to be called by the end of this year, says Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat.

Currently, pupils, teachers and parents alike have to cross an old suspension bridge across Sungai Nansang to reach SK Sungai Kapit – about a 20-minute drive from town.

Jamit noted that the old bridge was no longer sturdy, which could be dangerous for the users.

“If everything goes as planned, the tender could be called by the end of this year and the bridge project could be completed by next year,” the assemblyman told reporters after having inspected the proposed site for the project recently, where he was accompanied by Kapit Public Works Department divisional engineer Gerald George.

According to Jamit, the visit was a follow-up to his recent discussion

with Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing, who is also Minister of Infrastructure Development and Transportation.

“I was not around when Tan Sri ( Masing) made his fi rst visit to the site. He wanted me to write to his ministry to apply for the funding of the project.

“Initially, the proposal was for the construction of a ‘ bailey bridge’ connecting SK Sungai Kapit with the main road, but it was later changed to a concrete structure,” he said.

Meanwhile, Gerald said Kapit JKR was also in the process of cementing the access road between SK Sungai Kapit and one end of the old suspension bridge.

SK Sungai Kapit headmistress Mina Serudin, senior assistant Kenyulong Sengkuai, head of cocurriculum Caroline Ja Nabau and the school’s parents-teachers association chairman Tuai Rumah Madang Jelani were among those present at the site.

In her remarks, Mina thanked Masing, Jamit and the state government for the proposal to build the concrete bridge.

Presently, SK Sungai Kapit houses 473 pupils, 37 teachers and 13 non-teaching staff members.

Later, Jamit visited the cargo wharf at Jalan Bleteh.

Previously, local community leader Penghulu Sia Shui Poh voiced out a proposal for improvement works on the wharf to provide a larger, more efficient space for loading and unloading operations.
