DASwk to hold workshop on teaching, reading and spelling methods

-

KUCHING: Dyslexia Association of Sarawak ( DASwk) is conducting a one- day workshop on ‘ Dyslexia and Effective Methods of Teaching Reading and Spelling’ tomorrow (Oct 1) at the association’s premises at Jalan Maxwell here.

According to a press release yesterday, a total of 20 participants comprising parents, grandparents and speech therapists are expected to attend the workshop.

This workshop is organised in collaboration with Sarawak Social Welfare Department which provided the financial support.

The aim of the workshop is to empower parents and caregivers to assist children and those under their care to develop stronger phonological awareness which would enhance the children’s ability to read and write. During the workshop, participants will go through a series of hands- on activities led by DASwk president Dr Ong Puay Hoon and her team of facilitators.

Participants will be provided insights into recognising sound-letter correspondence, blending of sounds into syllables and words as well as segmenting of words into syllables and letters.

At the end of the workshop, participants should have gained a better understanding of dyslexia. In addition, they will have acquired useful techniques to teach reading and spelling not only to dyslexic children but to young learners in general.

Many of the participants had earlier called on DASwk to organise more workshops to raise public awareness and understanding of dyslexia besides promoting the role of the association in providing intervention support to children with dyslexia.

Members of the public who wish to find out more about dyslexia are encouraged to contact the association via email dyslexiaswk@ gmail.com or call the DASwk Learning and Resource Centre at 082-242900.
