SIBU: The Sibu United Chinese Association ( UCA) will hold a talk entitled ‘How to answer SPM Chinese papers more skilfully’ on Saturday ( Oct 1) at 8.45am at Wisma UCA, Alan Road.

Event co- organiser Joseph Chieng invited all Form 4 and Form 5 students as well as their parents to attend the talk.

“This is a rare chance for the students to come and understand more skilful ways to answer the SPM ( Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) Chinese papers and get better results. Do grab the opportunity,” he told a press conference yesterday.

The speakers are qualified teachers Chong Chin Foh, Wong Kin Lin and Mary Magdalene See. “They are three very experienced Chinese language teachers and through their guidance and sharing, we are confident that students can garner good results

in their SPM Chinese papers,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chieng lamented that fewer students are willing to sit for SPM Chinese papers due perhaps to the notion that if they did not perform well it would affect their overall performance.

According to him, if more students sat for Chinese papers, the marking level would be lowered, hence a better chance of getting good marks.

“Moreover, with the Chinese language playing such an important role in the international community, with even Malay students taking up Chinese courses, it is imperative that as Chinese, we ought to understand our mother tongue so that we can compete in this challenging world for survival,” he said.

UCA Youth chairman Lau Siew Kwong also encouraged students to take up Chinese subjects to ensure that they remained relevant in the Malaysian education system.

He said if fewer and fewer students took up Chinese subjects, it would have a serious impact on the development of Chinese education in time to come.
