Khairun and Maslinda win big chef cooking competition
KUCHING: Khairun Sofia Sumed and Maslinda Daud’s cooking prowess were no match for the other participants of the ‘ Next Big Chef Season 4’ as they emerged champions in the cooking competition.
The duo from SMK Bandar Samariang, who walked away with a UCSI University Bursary worth RM20,000 as well as cash prize of RM1,000, could not contain their excitement, stating that they were actually very nervous during the competition organised by UCSI University in collaboration with Malaysian Pepper Board at Boulevard Shopping Mall here last weekend.
The first runners-up went to Mary Hosanna Sylvester Seal and Tsong Jing Ying from SMK Sungai Tapang who received a UCSI University Bursary worth RM10,000 and cash prize of RM500 while Claudia Sanyo and Adelyn Ragu from SMK Penrissen No.1 were the second runners-up and received a UCSI University Bursary worth RM6,000 and RM300 cash prize.
Other finalists at the grand fi nale were Caroline Lansam and Olivia Tisin from SMK Bandar Samariang, Muhammad Aizat Mahmud and Vivienne Harry from SMK Bandar Kuching No.1 and Winona Usah and Martina Narty Asey from SMK Lake.
The annual cooking competition for local secondary schools attracted a total of 111 teams from 14 schools with the six highest scoring teams progressing to the Grand Finale where they were tasked with purchasing their own ingredients from Boulevard Hypermarket.
The teams had to complete their fi rst dish - the entrée - in the fi rst hour on top of a main course and a dessert.
Judges for the competition were Riverside Majestic executive chef Azhari Aziz, Masterchef Asia fi nalist Jasbir Kaur and Nis Spice Manufacturing Sdn Bhd chef Philip.
The cooking competition aimed to promote the unique skills and arts of the culinary profession as well as to highlight related job opportunities in the global industry among the younger generation.
