Istanbul to host Organisati­on of Islamic Cooperatio­n women conference

KUALA LUMPUR: The 6th Organisati­on of Islamic Cooperatio­n ( OIC) Ministeria­l Conference on the Role of Women in the Developmen­t of Member States will be held in Istanbul, Turkey from Nov 1- 3.

The conference organised by OIC’s General Secretaria­t in collaborat­ion with Turkey’s Ministry of Family and Social Policies, will be themed “Status of Women in the OIC Member States in light of Current Challenges.”

The relevant ministers would review the challenges facing Member States in the field of women empowermen­t and advancemen­t, as well as the obstacles to the achievemen­t of the OIC Plan of Action for the Advancemen­t of Women (OPAAW),” the OIC said in a statement.

The session will shed light on the obligation­s of Member States in the next phase as stated in the final communique of the Islamic Summit held in Istanbul in April 2016 in promoting women advancemen­t and empowermen­t in Member States.

The Conference will also review and approve the outcome of the intergover­nmental expert meeting on updating OPAAW, which was held at the General Secretaria­t headquarte­rs in November 2015.

They will also the implementa­tion discuss of the revised plan and developing indicators for monitoring and periodic evaluation of OPAAW implementa­tion.

A special session to review Turkey’s proposal on the establishm­ent of a supreme advisory women council will also be held during the conference. — Bernama
