PENANG: Sukma double gold medallist Elvis Bong Qian Zheng provided the golden cheer for the Sarawak team on the first day of the 6th Milo-Kementerian Pelajaran Malaysia-Wushu Federation of Malaysia ( MiloKPM-WFM) Wushu Championship at Han Chiang High School Indoor Stadium on Saturday.

He bagged the gold medal in the Boys A jianshu after scoring 9.24 points with a solid performance to beat Ang Qi Yue of Malacca by 0.02 points.

The joint bronze medallists were Chang Men Da ( 8.91) of Negeri Sembilan and Kok Yi Wang (8.90) of Johor respectively.

Earlier, Qi Yue had pipped Elvis Bong to the gold in Boys A changquan with 9.24 points against the latter’s score of 9.16 points.

Sarawak’s second silver medal was won by debutant Elvin Mackarther in the Boys D12 changquan. Elvin’s score was 8.60 points.

Meanwhile, Mandy Lim Xin Hui also got herself on the podium after finishing third in the Girls A nanquan and Girls A nandao.

The contributors of the state’s other bronze medals were Mok Xiao Yuan in the Boys B taijiquan and Ashley Chai Ern Nie in the Girls C daoshu.

Yesterday’s result failed to meet team manager Tiong Yong Hee’s expectations who felt that Sarawak could have won two more golds.

“We could have won two more golds through Alvin and Elvis Bong but they lost to their opponents by very close margins,” he said.

However, he was very pleased with the show of good fighting spirit and confidence from our athletes.

“Our main priority is still to give our young athletes the most needed exposure and also to identify potential talents for our Sukma 2018, 2020 and 2022 squads,” he added.

Sarawak’s total medal haul on Saturday was one gold, two silver and four bronze medals.
