Wushu has ‘potential’ to be a major sport
PENANG: Wushu has tremendous potential to become a leading sport in Malaysia following recent impressive achievements in both national and international competitions.
“Our athletes have excelled and won medals at major international wushu championships in Mongolia, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. I hope that the Wushu Federation of Malaysia will continue to work very closely with the Ministry of Education Malaysia and related bodies to plan and implement programmes to further promote and develop the sport in the country,” Penang state exco Chong Eng said at the welcoming dinner for the 6th Milo-KPM-WFM Wushu Championship at a local restaurant here on Friday.
She commended the WFM and host Penang Wushu Federation for a job well done in successfully organising the national wushu meet.
“I hope that the national wushu body is able to identify and groom potential athletes for international competitions and bring glory to Malaysia,” said Chong.
Meanwhile, organising chairman Dato Hng Ban Choon said the Penang Wushu and Lion Dance Association was honoured to be given the trust by WFM and KPM to host the championship this year.
“We have a record participation of more than 500 athletes from 13 states and the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya in this championship. This goes to show that wushu is being actively developed and promoted by our affiliate associations and that continuity in producing high caliber athletes is ensured,” said Hng who is also Penang Wushu and Lion Dance Association president and WFM deputy president.
Hng also hoped that all the athletes can display their best performance in the national meet after spending so much time and efforts preparing for the competition.
