NESTLÉ Health Science does its bit to fight diabetes

-

PETALING JAYA: NESTLÉ Health Science, the leading health science innovator behind the NUTREN® range of nutritional solutions, has once again collaborated with Diabetes Malaysia to mark the World Diabetes Day.

The collaboration will see NESTLÉ Health Science and Diabetes Malaysia engage in a renewed commitment to be a force for change by empowering, and supporting people living with diabetes to take charge of their health and prevent the disease from affecting their quality of life.

“One of the biggest challenges to living with diabetes is successfully managing your blood sugar level. Malaysians, love to eat.

“Over the past year, NESTLÉ Health Science has been working in partnership with leading hospitals nationwide to educate people with diabetes, pre diabetes, care givers and the public at large on the importance of healthy eating,” remarked Ms Emilyn Loo, business executive officer of NESTLÉ Health Science.

“I believe, what is crucial here, is for those affected to be empowered to take charge of their diets.

“This entails an understanding of the role of nutrition and the use of a complete and balanced nutritional supplement to help regulate blood sugar to stay in control and feel energised for the day,” she said.

Renowned international culinary expert, Chef Wan, whose late father was diagnosed with diabetes in his 40s, conducted a 30-minute cooking master class demonstrating the preparation of two all-time favourite Malaysian dishes with a healthy twist incorporating NUTREN UNTUK DIABETIK®, NESTLÉ Health Science‘s complete and balanced nutritional supplement for people with diabetes.

Chef Wan recalled thinking of creative ways to prepare meals for his father in an effort to encourage him to eat well.

“Many people make the mistake of assuming that food prepared for diabetics is bland and tasteless. That’s wrong. By making simple modifications to the recipe, such as replacing bad carbs with good carbs such as whole grains, legumes and nuts, adding more fibre and cutting down on the saturated fat, you can still create a beautiful and delicious dish without compromising on the flavour.”

Type 2 diabetes is a growing global pandemic. As of 2015, the National Health and Morbidity Survey reports a staggering 3.5 million or 17.5 per cent of Malaysians aged 18 and above, have been diagnosed with the disease.

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) estimates that up to 70 per cent of type 2 diabetes cases could be prevented through lifestyle interventions.
