MyStats 2016 – strengthening statistical usage for decisions and innovation
PUTRAJAYA: The Fourth Malaysia Statistics Conference, MyStats 2016, jointly organised by Department of Statistics Malaysia ( DOSM), Bank Negara Malaysia and Malaysia Institute of Statistics, envisaged innovation in the field of statistical science to promote statistics as a crucial and beneficial tool for evidence-based decision making.
Themed ‘ Strengthening Statistical Usage for Decisions and Innovation’, MyStats 2016 aimed to provide an avenue for practitioners and users of statistics and its applications in various fields to discuss, exchange ideas as well as highlight issues and challenges pertaining to the compilation and communication of statistics for analyses and policy making.
The conference served as a platform for greater discussion and collaboration among statisticians, researchers and users of statistics to strengthen many areas of statistical science including methodology, application and use of statistics for decisions and innovation.
The conference attracted over 500 participants from the private and public sectors as well as users and compilers of statistics, featuring some 30 distinguished speakers with vast experience in the field of statistical compilation and analysis who shared their views and experiences with that new insights for improvement in the field of statistical science.
The invited plenary speakers were Dr. Pedro Luis do Nascimento Silva, president of International Statistical Institute (ISI), and Dato’ Ir. Ahmad ‘Asri Abdul Hamid, CEO of Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia ( CIDB). Former United Nations Statistics Division ( UNSD) director, Professor Dr Paul Cheung was one of the panellists too.
Speakers from agencies and institutions of other countries such as those from University College London, Central Bank of Philippines, Central Bank of Brunei Darussalam and Bank Indonesia were part of the discussion team too.
“It is hoped that this session provides opportunity for young statisticians, including students and practitioners in their early career, to discuss the future of statistics, challenges and opportunities in statistical science as well as share their experiences in dealing with statistics,” said Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Hasan, chief statistician Malaysia.
