-

SIBU: A total of 40 teams have confirmed their participation in the first Selangau Rafting Challenge which will be held on Dec 4, starting at Rumah Linggi and ending at Selangau bazaar.

Speaking during a full council meeting yesterday, Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai said there would be over 100 participants in the competition which is a signature event for the Selangau Festival which runs from Dec 14.

He said it was very likely that the festival will make it into Sarawak Tourism Board’s calendar of events.

“This is important, in line with our council’s vision of making Selangau Rafting Challenge as its signature event and main attraction in the upcoming challenge as well as future editions of the Selangau Festival.

“Besides, Selangau Festival can become a catalyst for socioeconomy development which comes along with the festival itself,” he said.

Sempurai noted that water sports, recreation and similar activities could provide business opportunities and attract tourists. He added that residents in and around Selangau should tap into this potential.

“I hope all people living in areas surrounding Selangau such as Mukah, Bintulu, Sibu Town, Kanowit and other towns can come and join us at Selangau Festival at Selangau bazaar,” he said.

Meanwhile, Cr Ho Kok Munting who chairs the festival organising committee told the same meeting that various competitions had been lined up for the festival.

He mentioned a karaoke competition, Ratu Kebaya contest, traditional musical instrument recital competition, ‘ poco-poco’, street soccer, traditional dishes cooking competition, and an Iban poetry contest.

Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing will officiate at the opening of the festival on Dec 2 while Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Joseph Entulu Belaun will grace the closing ceremony on Dec 4.
