KUCHING: Secondary school leavers can opt to take up diploma courses offered by Co- operative College of Malaysia (CCM), said its director- general Associate Professor Dr Abdul Rahman Abdul Razak Shaik.

He added that co- operatives management diploma graduates are required to serve at a medium or small co- op for six months to gain working experience and they are given a RM1,000 allowance per month.

“This is an approach where the graduates can get work experience before deciding whether to continue (their studies) to the degree level, get involved in coops or look for a job,” he said at a CCM seminar launching ceremony which also marked the closing of the college’s state-level 60th anniversary celebrations at a hotel here recently.

The seminar titled ‘ Internet Millionaire: Co- op Opportunity’ was held yesterday and attended by co- op operators from throughout the state.

On the earlier diploma graduate work experience, Abdul Rahman added that the students will serve in their hometowns; for example, if they are from Johor Bahru, then they will serve at a co- op there.

He said that previously, there were diploma graduates who wanted to work for co- ops but medium or small co- ops could not afford to give them diplomalevel salaries and only RM500 in allowances, resulting in the graduates opting to find jobs elsewhere.

However, under the Co- op Career Scheme, the graduates get six months of working experience, entrepreneurship exposure and the opportunity to be hired by the co- op they work for after the sixmonth period.

This greatly benefits the graduates as they also get to

Meanwhile, he added, CCM will conduct certain compulsory courses online starting from next year. There will be a test at the end of each course which the students must sit for in person at the respective CCM branches in their area.

Aside from that, CCM will focus its activities on sundry and wholesale trade as well as key tourism areas for Sarawak next year.

“Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg recently said that tourism is the third largest sector, or 15 per cent of Sarawak’s GDP (gross domestic product), so CCM is making the effort to develop tourism.”

Meanwhile, he hoped that seminar participants would use the opportunity to bring success to their respective co- ops.

Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais who is Assistant Minister for Resource Planning and Assistant Minister for Entrepreneur Development officiated at the function.

CCM Sarawak branch director Siti Maimunah Jerni was also present.
