BWF chief on rationale behind 5x11 scoring

-

KUALA LUMPUR: The 5x11 scoring system from the current 21 points format in badminton encourages young players to be more competitive in the speed game, said Badminton World Federation ( BWF) president PoulErik Hoyer Larsen.

He said badminton needs changes and challenges to ensure its is among the world’s top sporting events.

“There are three things that I try to express why, firstly, we know that the younger generation want fast results, and this attracts them to badminton.

“They also want to get faster to the peak, more peaks and the peak that extends their excitement (to the game),” he told reporters after the launching of the SS Purple League 2016/ 17 at the Double Three by Hilton here yesterday.

A local sports portal reported that the 11 points scoring system has drawn mixed response from the players. World number one Datuk Lee Chong Wei is in favour of the 11-points system as it will give an advantage to experienced shuttlers.

However, Larsen said there was no evidence to show that senior players would win more (titles) if the 11 points was implemented.

“I think it’s striking that the conclusion is like that, we have tested the scoring system for a while but there’s no evidence in the case study to show that the older generation will win more.

“The players need some speed in their body, if those who are mentally strong during the game because it’s going to be tight sometimes, they may have the advantage,” he said. — Bernama
