MIRI: More than 150 delegates, including international participants from Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, Singapore, India, Australia and Japan are attending the 29th Symposium of Malaysian Chemical Engineers ( SOMChE) 2016 until tomorrow ( Dec 3).

Themed ‘ Engineering Solutions for Sustainable Development’, the symposium will address challenges in the provision of food, water and energy supplies, as well as environmental issues and climate change as the global population continues to grow phenomenally.

Organising chairman Dr Agus Saptoro said the symposium brings together the community of chemical and process engineers and other related engineers to discuss the latest advances and best practices in engineering solutions in industry and academic for sustainable food, water, energy and environment.

“Our university is privileged to co-host SOMCHe 2016 and I would like to thank the Institution of Chemical Engineers ( IChemE) for partnering with us on this prestigious conference,” said Curtin University Sarawak deputy pro-vice chancellor Prof Beena Giridharan.

“Engineers, long regarded as agents of innovation and change, have an important role to play in addressing these monumental challenges, and ensuring the world enjoys sustainable development without harming the environment.”

IChemE Malaysia chairman Prof Dr Abdul Aziz Abdul Raman said the theme clearly demonstrates the role chemical engineers can play in providing safe and sustainable engineering solutions for various industrial activities.

“The symposium has been a venue for research community and industries to gather and exchange latest development in chemical engineering matters.

“The perspectives have changed. Now we are all contributors to society and we aspire to be the bridge between society and academia,” he said.

The distinguished plenary speakers are Institute of Materials Malaysia ( IMM) president M Azmi M Noor and Sarawak Biodiversity Centre CEO Charlie Yeo; while the keynote speakers are Prof Ahmad Fauzi Ismail from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia ( UTM), Dr Lee Keat Teong from Universiti Sains Malaysia ( USM), Dr Ravindra Pogaku from Universiti Malaysia Sabah ( UMS), Prof Vishnu Pareek from Curtin University Australia, Prof Xiao Dong Chen from Xiamen University and Monash University Australia, and Taufiq Yap Yun Hin of Universiti Putra Malaysia ( UPM).

There will be four awards presented – Best Paper Award sponsored by Solution Engineering and American Chemical Society (ACS) Malaysian Chapter, Best Paper Award for Material Science and Engineering sponsored by IMM, Best Poster Award sponsored by Solution Engineering and ACS, as well as YSNASM Young Investigator Leadership Award sponsored by Young Scientist Network ( YSN) Malaysia.
