KUCHING: The 1Singai Festival has never failed to attract youths since its introduction three years ago, the organiser, the Putera Sentosa Development Sdn Bhd, disclosed.

Its director Suraya Julot said the number of youths participating in the various activities organised during the festival kept increasing.

“Like in the previous festivals, most of those operating the sale stalls are youths and we really hope the number will keep increasing in years to come,” she said at the closing ceremony of the festival yesterday.

About 40 stalls selling and exhibiting various products were erected at the festival site at the 1Singai Commercial Centre in Tondong, Bau.

Suraya said the festival, which is the third edition, was organised as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR).

Aside from sales and exhibitions, activities such as beauty pageant contest, sports clinic and boxing competition, futsal and sepak takraw competition, cultural and singing performance were also held during the three-day festival which will end today.

Started in 2014, the festival was initiated with the objective to give exposure and experience to the local entrepreneurs, especially the youths in the area, by providing a platform for them to start their businesses.

Suraya said it was their hope that the festival would attract visitors to explore Tondong area, and Bau area at large, and boost the local economy.

She said given that Tondong area has vast potential, Putera Sentosa had planned to develop Phase Two of the 1Singai Commercial Centre next year.

“This is part of our efforts to help further develop Tondong area into a new commercial hub in Bau,” she said.

Suraya also expressed her gratitude to Tasik Biru assembylman and the festival advisor Datuk Henry Harry Jinep for his guidance and advice.
