KUCHING: Otakyun! 2016 kicked off with an impressive crowd at Vivacity Megamall event hall yesterday.

The two-day anime, comic and games (ACG) convention was organised by a group of volunteers called Anime Gathering (AG) Team.

Organising chairperson Carol Chin expected about 500 people to show up for the weekend convention.

“This year we picked virtual reality theme where this whole convention is one huge game.

“The exhibitors are the merchants and all activities are called quests,” she said, adding that as the organising chairperson she was the game master.

These ‘quests’ include Side Quests such as stage games and treasure hunts while in Dungeon Quest, special guests engage in interactive sessions with patrons.

“We’ve invited professional cosplayers Shine from West Malaysia and Miu from Vietnam to the event.”

Some ACG enthusiasts showed up at the convention dressed as their favourite characters.

“The trend for girls this year are characters from a mobile game called Mystic Messenger while the boys could be random in their choices,” Chin said.

Some 30 ‘merchants’ are selling various ACG-related merchandise such as posters, t-shirts, postcards and badges.

According to Chin, AG Team has been organising ACG events since 2007, the last large scale convention they organised was two years ago.
