SIBU: Government officers should move beyond their traditional statutory and coordination roles to engage with local communities through existing social and recreational programmes.

Having said this, Sibu Resident Hii Chang Kee added that gone were the days when government officers were waiting for people to come to them.

“Instead, we should be going down to the ground or ‘turun padang’ to serve the people.”

“We must be seen mingling with and engaging the local folk whom we serve,” he stressed.

Hii was speaking during the ‘Sibu Division Resident and District Offices Appreciation cum Integrity Night 2016’ held at Kingwood Hotel on Friday.

“Therefore, officers in both the Resident and District offices must be innovative in initiating or working with local communities through various programmes such as ‘Meet The People Session’ and ‘Randau Social’.

“An honest and clean civil service is vital to maintain public confidence and support for the government,” he pointed out.

Hii added integrity was therefore an important ingredient for effective governance.

The event was held for staff, colleagues and family members to forge inter-personal relations, besides rewarding deserving staff with excellent service awards in various categories.
