SUPP Pelawan secretary wants food truck business be developed in Sibu
SIBU: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Pelawan secretary Michael Tiang wants to see the food truck business be developed further here.
He said the business concept had long existed in Peninsular Malaysia and begun to develop in Sarawak, especially in Kuching and Miri.
As such, he hoped local enterprising youths would take the opportunity to venture into this business towards improving themselves.
“It is probably difficult for us to see the food truck business be developed in Sibu. It’s different in Kuching and Miri where they (food truck operators) sell a wide variety of food and drinks like sweet corn, burgers and local snacks, on board vehicles,” Tiang told reporters during his visit to the 1Malaysia Food Fair 2016 at Sibu Town Square (Phase II) on Friday night where Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) deputy chairman Robert Lau Hui Yew, political secretary to chief minister Daniel Bujal and several SUPP members were present.
According to Tiang, who is also a political secretary to chief minister, the food truck business is a very appropriate venture for local enterprising youths in the current challenging economy, because ‘it is easy to handle with low start-up capital’.
However, he said they would still need to confront various challenges such as conditions and regulations imposed by the local authorities such as cleanliness and licensing application.
“As far as we know, the local authority is currently drafting up guidelines to assist food truck operators in carrying out the business more orderly and effectively, as well as to attract more customers,” he said.
Tiange also said SUPP would conduct a series of workshops here, as well as in Kuching and Miri next year to assist those interested in this form of business.
On the visit to the 1Malaysia Food Fair 2016, Tiang said the objective was to study how the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) could manage it successfully.
