SRDC wants to lead environment development under LA21, says deputy chairman
SIBU: Sibu Rural District Council ( SRDC) hopes to take the lead in environmental programmes slated towards achieving sustainable development as outlined under Local Agenda 21 ( LA21).
In this regard, SRDC deputy chairman Robert Lau Hui Yew wantstoseemorereplantingoftrees by and environmental awareness programmes for both the urban and rural communities.
“We are the custodian of the environment for the future generations. This a big burden, if you think about it – it is also a great challenge for us to leave a great legacy for our children and also for Sarawak,” he said after the official launch of the ‘SRDC Tree Planting Programme’ at Sibu Jaya yesterday.
According to Lau, the LA21 is an initiative by the United Nations that calls for full engagement and commitment by members of any local community to make their base or area of living a much better place.
He said the agendum were then adopted by the federal Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government whereby funds were allocated to local authorities nationwide for them to organise programmes involving local communities.
“Tree planting is one of the programmes implemented by SRDC,” he said.
Earlier, organising chairperson Councillor Halimah Japar said the objectives of the programme were to inculcate environmental awareness in every member of the local community, as well as to create a green environment and instil the love for nature in the people.
She said of the total 100 tree saplings planted during the programme, 50 were contributed by Amcorp Bhd while the rest were from the council.
The event at Sibu Jaya was also attended by SRDC Environmental Health Section assistant officer Lentina Maringgai and Amcorp Bhd representative Eddy Phua.
