Unhealthy lifestyle leads to kidney failure, warns Lee

MIRI: Unhealthy lifestyle, imbalance diet and bad habits are the factors contributi­ng to the soaring number of young people diagnosed with kidney disease.

According to Assistant Minister for Land and Air Transporta­tion and Safety Datuk Lee Kim Shin, many of these young patients have problems with high blood sugar and blood pressure and failing to control the condition could lead to kidney diseases.

“Another type of kidney patient is those who over consumed medication such like painkiller. This type of patients are usually those with foot pain due to uric acid, which caused them to consume pain killer to ease the pain. In the long- run the consequenc­es is adding burden to the kidney and that leads to kidney failure,” Lee said when

officiatin­g at the Miri Hing Ann associatio­n’s health talk held at Meritz Hotel.

Lee urged Malaysians, particular­ly those aged 45 and above to practise a healthy lifestyle such as exercising regularly.

The public health talk was jointly organised by Miri Hing Ann associatio­n and Gleneagles Kota Kinabalu to address issues on longevity, diseases like colorectal cancer, obesity and diabetes as well as foot and ankle health.

Dr John Cheng Lung Seng, a consultant gastroente­rologist; Dr Chan Khan Wei, a consultant surgeon in general, minimal invasive and bariatric and metabolic surgery as well as Dr Nahulan Thevarajah, a consultant orthopaedi­c and trauma surgeon (foot and ankle surgery) were the key speakers at the health talk.
