‘How I Met Your Mother’ spin-off in development with ‘This is Us’ writers

THE CONCEPT behind the CBS comedy ‘ How I Met Your Mother’, which was cancelled in 2014, could rise from the ashes in the form of a spin- off, penned by the writers of breakout new US show “This is Us,” according to The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline.

According to reports, the show, entitled “How I Met Your Father,” isn’t a spin- off in the traditional sense. Instead, the project uses the same storytelling technique as the original show, which ran 2005 to 2014 on CBS, but with a female point of view and new characters. This time, it will focus on a mother telling her children about how she met their father through a series of flashbacks.

CBS already came up with the idea back in 2014 with a concept called “How I Met Your Dad.” A pilot was even fi lmed, with actress Greta Gerwig in the lead role and Meg Ryan as the narrator, taking over from Josh Radnor and Bob Saget. However, the test episode failed to convince executives at the network.

The arrival of Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger could get the project back off the ground. The screenwriters recently worked on “This is Us,” a series that also relies on fl ashbacks to tell its story. The new show, which airs on NBC, appears to be a hit with American viewers, with more than 14 million people tuning in each week.

“How I Met Your Father” is reportedly in the process of being written. No network has yet been linked to the show, which won’t necessarily be heading to CBS.
