8,200 ODs released through CRP since 2011

KLUANG: The Community-based Rehabilita­tion Programme (CRP) implemente­d at six community rehabilita­tion centres in the country using the national blue ocean strategy (NBOS) has shown to be a success.

Chief Secretary to the Government, Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa said 8,200 offenders under supervisio­n (ODs) had been released through the programme since 2011.

“According to Malaysia Prisons Department statistics, about seven per cent of inmates are repeat offenders, but through the CRP, only 0.5 per cent of the ODs are repeat offenders.

“So this is a success of the NBOS which has been recognised as among the best in the world and we never hear of ODs escaping or fighting in the CRP,” he said while visiting

Ali said the government was planning to expand the CRP to Sarawak.

The CRP, he said, is currently implemente­d at Mahkota Camp here, Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Camp in Alor Setar, Kedah; Syed Sirajudin Camp in Gemas, Negeri Sembilan; Desa Pahlawan Camp in Kota Baharu, Kelantan; Batu 10 Camp in Kuantan, Pahang and Paradise Camp in Kota Belud, Sabah.

There are presently 1,645 ODs in the CRP which is an extension of the in- house rehabilita­tion programme for prison inmates prior to their release to carry on life as useful citizens.

The launch of the CRP and opening of the Mahkota CRP Camp was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on March 26, 2011.

The Mahkota CRP Camp situated on 0.8 hectares and has four blocks including two dormitorie­s, a surau, canteen and hall has 236 ODs. — Bernama
